MAGNA Chooses Sustainability in Stormwater Management
In 2020, Brookfield Residential tasked MAGNA Engineering Services Inc. with designing a stormwater solution for Livingston Pond E Storm Park. MAGNA solutions made it possible to preserve the existing 21-ha wetland facility with significant grade challenges and implement state-of-the-art stormwater management techniques. Despite its challenges, we chose to integrate the natural wetland into our solution instead of replacing it with our solution.
Our Approach
MAGNA's approach to stormwater management is our unique brand of Stormpark. The MAGNA Stormpark™️, resulting from a longstanding collaboration with our partner Source2Source (S2S), seamlessly integrates stormwater utility, community placemaking, and ecological services. Unlike traditional methods, which often sacrifice environmental integrity for utility, the MAGNA Storm Park prioritizes all three metrics equally.
One of the key innovations is the S2S Nautilus Pond®, which efficiently removes sediment and trash from stormwater, meeting regulatory water quality objectives without the need for high-maintenance equipment. Additionally, the Treatment Wetland and Vertical Flow Biofilter utilize natural processes to further enhance water quality, while native plantings support biodiversity.

Despite facing challenges such as groundwater management and construction complexities, MAGNA's expertise and adaptability ensured the project's success. The MAGNA Stormpark™️ has economic, environmental, and societal benefits that outweigh the initial capital cost, making it a cost-effective and sustainable solution for stormwater management. The project net resulted in over $5 million in cost savings -nearly a 30% cost reduction from the initial design.
